Ross

Clan Ross (sometimes called Clan Anrais, or Gille Andras) of Balnagowan in Ross-shire, Scotland. Not to be cconfused with Ross of the Lowlands, which descends from de Roos of Normandy. Malcolm de Ros was created Earl of Ross in the 12th century. The clan served King Alexander II and the Clan Chief, Fearchar Mac an t’sagirt was knighted and confirmed as Earl of Ross by the king in 1234. Fearchar's son, William received lands in Skye and Lewis. William's son, William was captured by the English in 1296 and 1306. William's son, Hugh married Maud, sister of Robert Bruce. Hugh was killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333. Euphemia, heir of William, Earl of Ross claimed the earldom as Countess of Ross in 1372. David Ross, 12th chief led the clan against Cromwell in the Civil War andd was captured at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. His son David, succeeded at nine years old, but died childless in 1711, the next chief being his cousin, Malcolm Ross of Pitcalnie.

Arms: Gules, three lions rampant argent, armed and langued azure.

Crest: A hand holding a garland of juniper proper.

Motto: Spem successus alit ( Success nourishes hope.)
