Clan Spens of Lathallan in Fieshire, Scotland. Descended from John "Dispensator or Le Dispenser" and was first mentioned in a list of the tenants and vassals of Walter fitz Alan High Steward of Scotland in the 1160s. William de Spens, laird of Gylgyrstoun, Glespany obtained the lands of Dumbarnie and Bondiingtoune from William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas in 1358. His son William de Spens married Isabel Campbell of Glendouglas, heiress and daughter of Sir Duncan Campbell of Glen Douglas and Strachur and was granted in 1385 the lands of Athaland, Ketydy and Craigswmqwar from Robert Earl of Fife and Menteith.

Arms: Quarterly, 1st and 4th, or, a lion rampant gules, within a bordure of the last charged with eight roses argent, in the dexter chief point a heart ensigned with an Imperial crown, both proper; 2nd and 3rd, Gyronny of eight or and sable, charged of a quarter in dexter chief per bend argent and azure; over all on an inescutcheon or, a lion rampant gules, surmounted by a bend sable, charged with three mascles argent, which inescutcheon is ensigned of a Lord-Baron’s coronet.

Crest: A hart’s head erased proper.

Motto: Si deus quis contra (If God is for us, who is against us).
