Clan Wemyss and the Earls of Wemyss, of that Ilk in Fifeshire, Scotland; descended from Macduff, the Pictish Earls of Fife; of this family, Sir Michael and his brother, Sir David Wemyss were sent with Scott of Balwearie to Norway in 1290, to accompany the infant Queen Margaret, the Fair Maid of Norway. In 1296, Sir Michael swore allegiance to Edward I of England, but later supported Robert the Bruce.

Crest: A swan proper.
Motto: Je pense (I think).
