Mac Gille Eoin of Dowart or Duart, Isle of Mull, Scotland, afterwards Morvaren, created baronets 1632; descended from Gilleathan Na Tuaidh (Gillean of the Battle-axe), who fought against King Haakon of Norway at the Battle of the Largs in 1263; his son signed himself as Gillemoir Macilyn in the Ragman Roll of 1296, swearing fealty to Edward I of England. Gillean’s grandson, Malcolm fought at Bannockburn, and his son, Iain Dubh was the father of Eachainn Reaganach or Hector the Stern, founder of the Macleans, later the Maclaines of Lochbuie, and also Lachlan Lubanach, or Lachlan the Wily, who founded the Macleans of Duart, a separate clan to Maclaine.

Arms: Quarterly, 1st, argent, a rock gules; 2nd, argent, a dexter hand fessways couped gules, holding a cross crosslet fitchée in pale azure; 3rd, or, a lymphad, oars in saltire, sails furled sable, flagged gules; 4th, argent, a salmon naiant proper, and in chief two eagles' heads erased respectant gules.

Crest: A tower embattled argent.

Motto: Virtue mine honour.
