MacIver
Clan Maciver (as yet unconfirmed by the Lord Lyon) of Asknish in Argyllshire, Scotland and a Sept of Clan Campbell, 1st registration of arms unknown; 2nd, 1853; 3rd, 1881; 4th, 1884. Of Norse stock, and has been suggested the clan descend from Imhair (Ivar), a Norse chief who joined King Olaf the White of Dublin in his siege against Dumbarton in 870. Another source claims that Iver was the son of Duncan, Lord of Lochnow, who was the progenitor of the Campbells. Ironically, the Campbells seized the Maciver estates at Lorne. The first recorded member of the clan was Doenaldus, son of Makbeth Macyvar, who helped set the boundary between the lands of Arbroath Abbey and the barony of Kynblathmund in 1219. In 1570, Duncan Maciver, chief of Asknish, was captain or keeper of Inveraray Castle for the Campbells. His cousin, Charles Maciver, the Laird of Ballochyle, who often called himself Campbell, was elected Chamberlain of Argyll in May 1589. The Macivers were always close to the Campbells, and intermarried with them and often changed their name to Campbell.
